Identifying the Factors Influencing Restaurant Preferences of Families with Children: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Purpose – The aim of this study is to identify the factors influencing the restaurant preferences of families with children and to offer recommendations for restaurant operators. In line with this objective, the study seeks to explore the criteria that families with children consider when choosing a restaurant, the significance of child-friendly services, and the impact of these services on families with children.
Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted using a qualitative research methodology, with data collected through semi-structured interviews with 21 participants and analyzed using thematic analysis. The thematic coding process was carried out by three independent researchers, resulting in the identification of four main themes: (1) Child Comfort and Safety, (2) Play and Entertainment Areas, (3) Nutritional and Dining Support, and (4) Care and Rest Areas.
Results – The findings of the study highlight the central role of children in restaurant preferences. A significant number of participants indicated that meeting the needs of children is a decisive factor in restaurant selection. Moreover, it was found that family-friendly restaurants not only provide features targeted at children but also offer experiences where parents can relax and meet their own needs. Social media, recommendations from family and friends, and official restaurant websites were identified as reliable sources of reference for restaurant selection.
Discussion – In conclusion, the study clearly shows that having children plays a decisive role in parents' restaurant choices. Restaurant operators need to adopt a holistic approach that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of families by considering factors such as children's safety, play areas, healthy menus, and family-friendly environments. These findings serve as an important guide for restaurant operators to enhance their family-friendly services and provide an experience that meets the expectations of families.
