The Mediating Role of Organizational Commitment in the Effect of Mobbing on Sustainable Behaviors: An Application in the Healthcare Sector

Purpose – In the last twenty years, the concept of mobbing has been among the significant factors affecting the behavior of public and private sector employees. This research examines the effect of mobbing, the independent variable, on sustainable behaviors, the dependent variable. Furthermore, the mediating role of organizational commitment in the effect of mobbing on sustainable behaviors is investigated.
Design/methodology/approach – The research population consists of employees of Çorum Sungurlu State Hospital. Simple random sampling was used. Data were collected by administering questionnaires to 200 of the 362 personnel working at the hospital. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 32 and AMOS analysis programs.
Results – As a result of the analyses, it was determined that mobbing experienced by employees in the workplace has a negative and significant effect on the sub-dimensions of organizational commitment: emotional, continuance, and normative commitment. Additionally, it was found that the level of organizational commitment of employees has a positive and significant effect on sustainable behaviors. Furthermore, it was concluded that organizational commitment (emotional, continuance, and normative) plays a mediating role in the effect of mobbing on sustainable behaviors.
Discussion – The research is considered to make significant contributions to the literature in terms of its purpose, methodology, findings, and the model developed. In this context, it is thought that applying the study to different institutions and sectors will contribute to the literature. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to the creation of more peaceful working environments and the goal of a more livable world.
